Indian Independence Day celebrated on 28 August, 2011
What a wonderful celebration of the Indian Independence on Sunday, 28th August, 2001 by your own IAAC. The function was well attended by around 250 people who were left spell bound on the quality of performances.
The function was presided over by the Chief Guest Senator Kate Lundy. Other VIPs included Mary Porter MLA, representing ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs, High Commissioner of India, Mrs. Sujatha Singh and Dr. Chris Bourke MLA. The VIPs were very pleased with the different cultural items and the way the programme was organised . Office bearers of many community associations were present on this occasion. The VIPs were greeted with beating of Dhol on entry to the function hall.
Outstanding performances by all the local artists kept the audience nicely engaged. The intercepting vivid description of various items by our MCs Kishor, Tanvi and Nasreen was fabulous. Added to this the stage decor, stage management, entry management, membership drive, VIP welcome & seeing them off etc. all went on beautifully.
The program started with singing the National Anthems of India and Australia. This was followed by speeches of VIPs and the IAAC President. The cultural programme started with Bharatnatyam dance performed by six young girls of Apsara Arts group. Then there were thrilling solo dances by Mili and Ishita. Aradhna performed a dance on the song “Senorita....” from the famous movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Two thrilling dances by Ira lifted the whole mood of the function. She provided excellent Lavani dance and then Vande Matram dance. Amazingly, the solo male dancer, Paras provided so much of thrill on some bollywood numbers that the audience could not resist constant clapping. In between these dance programmes, Soumitra, Manoj and Arun sang melodious patriotic songs. Kishor and Mohan read their poems highlighting the social issues facing India. Finally, our DJ Bobby provided the music for dancing.
Tasty vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals were catered for by Neeta’s Indian Cuisine and sold at reasonable prices during the break.
The entry to the function was free for members. Non-members were requested to contribute $5 per person.
All in all, the function provided 3-hours of fun-filled excitement to the community.
