Prayers on 9 Jan 05

Asian Tsunami Disaster

Dear Members,

Best wishes to you & your family for 2005. Trust you all had nice and peaceful holidays.

Unfortunately, during this time we all witnessed the Asian Tsunami Disaster.  Every day death tolls are going up by thousands and any relief efforts and funds are not sufficient to sustain the relief operations.

Southern part of India is one of the worst affected areas particularly Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which has reported 818 deaths so far, has the largest number of missing persons with 5,681 inhabitants still not accounted for, millions are affected especially children’s as per figures issued by the Home Ministry, Govt. of India yesterday.

IAAC along with Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre (HTCC) and Association for India’s Development (AID)* are jointly holding prayers and pooja for the victims and their family on 9th January at Florey Temple from 11am onwards till 2pm.  During this period donations (in cash & cheques only) can be made to the representatives of AID, who will issue a receipt of the donations on the spot.  Your donations will make a much-needed relief to those who urgently needed.  Please donate generously.

Bhog (prasadam) will be followed by of Pooja and speeches.  IAAC is sponsoring the Bhog.

As a community, we have opportunity to show our generosity and solidarity towards the victims and people affected by the Tsunami Disaster.  As one community we all should encourage our selves and others to mobilise the support for such cause and be part of this event by participating in large numbers as a mark of respect for the victims and their families affected by this natural catastrophe. Your support in spreading this message will also be much appreciated.

NOTE: As a mark of respect for the Tsunami victims, IAAC’s planned cultural program at Indian High Commission on 26th January and outdoor sporting activities events are now being cancelled.

One of AID India's main coordinator - Balaji Sampath has sent us an update from Chennai. My sincere apologies for not attaching the original email, but a gist of the email is as follows:

"Reporting from Chennai about the Relief efforts on the Tsunami hit areas.

The relief work is planned in 3 phases:
(1) Immediate Relief - food, clothing, blankets, temporary shelter,
medicines and health camps for emergencies and epidemics
(2) Second Level Relief - Construction of huts and houses and health needs
(3) Third Level Relief - Livelihood needs for the families affected -
forming cooperatives and providing livelihood support like boats, nets etc.

Right now all focus in on the first phase."
